Heat pumps are versatile heating and cooling systems that have become increasingly popular in New Jersey and Pennsylvania homes. However, like any HVAC equipment, they require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance, energy efficiency, and longevity. Whether you're a new heat pump owner or looking to improve your maintenance routine, understanding the types of care your system needs is crucial.
Princeton Air has been a leader in heating & cooling services for over 52 years. From essential DIY maintenance tasks to professional tune-ups, our tips and services can keep your heat pump running smoothly, reduce energy costs, and avoid unexpected breakdowns.
Seasonal DIY Maintenance
- Check Air Filters - Dirty air filters can restrict airflow and lead to performance issues. Check with your filter manufacturer for changing or cleaning recommendations, usually every 30-60 days.
- Keep Your System Clean - Wipe down the indoor unit or air handlers to get rid of dust or debris accumulation.
- Open All Vents - Keeping all of your air vents open will optimize efficiency and help prevent airflow restrictions.
- Outdoor Unit Care - Make sure any debris, such as leaves and landscaping, are at least 18 inches from the outside unit. Check for snow accumulation and ice build up in the winter.
Professional Tune-Ups: 2 Times Per Year
Since heat pumps can replace both your furnace and air conditioner, it’s recommended that they get serviced twice a year: once for heating and another for cooling. During a tune-up, the Princeton Air team will thoroughly clean, inspect, and test every component of your heat pump to ensure it’s operating at peak performance.
- Clean the evaporator and condenser coils to improve heat transfer
- Check refrigerant levels and inspect for leaks
- Inspect and tighten electrical connections
- Lubricate moving parts, including motors and bearings
- Clean or replace air filters
- Test the thermostat for proper communication with the heat pump
- Verify proper airflow and test for any obstructions
- Inspect and clean the condensate drain line
- Check the defrost assembly and verify the defrost timer is working
- Test safety controls and switches
- Inspect ductwork for leaks or damage (not included with ductless systems)
- Measure and adjust the system's airflow balance
- Check the blower wheel and motor for proper operation
- Inspect the compressor for proper operation and any signs of wear
- Verify proper startup and shutdown sequences
