Micro Combined Heat & Power (mCHP)
mCHP Overview Video
CHP applications involve the recovery of wasted engine heat to produce useful thermal energy and electricity. To do this, natural gas or propane fuel is combusted in a YANMAR engine to generate electricity, and the heat that is normally lost in the engine’s exhaust system is recovered to provide heat for hot water (example: laundry or dish washing) or for space heating, cooling and dehumidification.
How widely used is CHP in the United States?
CHP can be used in almost every state, and is mainly found in areas with high concentrations of commercial activity, high electricity prices and energy policies that favor Combined Heat & Power.
Where does CHP make sense?
CHP is ideally suited for facilities that have a high demand for heat (a high thermal load) in areas where electricity costs more than $0.10 per kilowatt-hour. Some examples are:
- Commercial: larger office buildings, hotels, airports, nursing homes and full-service restaurants
- Institutions: K-12 schools, colleges, military bases, prisons and hospitals
- Residential: multi-family housing and luxury residential homes
How can I learn if my facility could benefit from CHP?
By selecting the “Start your Performance Summary” button on the CHP Product page, you can begin the process with YANMAR to develop an analysis that can be used to make an informed decision about the cost/benefit based on your specific application.
Benefits:
- Energy Efficient
- Environmentally Friendly

YANMAR America Energy Systems mCHP
At Princeton Air, we are proud to represent YANMAR CHP (Combined Heat & Power) in the Central New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania areas. Based on YANMAR's 30-plus year history of design and manufacturing experience in Energy Systems equipment and over 300,000 installations worldwide, we have the confidence in YANMAR's CHP equipment, technical training and support to recommend it to our customers.
- YANMAR CHP (Combined Heat & Power) has the following advantages over traditional energy delivery methods of centralized power plants and onsite gas use:
a. Onsite Generation: Electricity is generated close to the point of use, helping to avoid transmission and distribution losses that occur when electricity travels over power lines. YANMAR CHP with Blackout Start (BOS) capability can provide electricity even when the grid has failed due to storms or other factors.
b. Waste Heat Recovery: Thermal energy from space heating, domestic hot water heating, pool/spa heating and dehumidification or process applications goes unused in centralized power plants as waste, but in YANMAR CHP applications, it is used to offset boiler or other heating device usage.
c. Simple Integration: YANMAR CHP can be easily integrated into various electrical and thermal systems in small commercial or residential applications, including new construction and retrofitting into existing buildings.
d. Blackout Start CHP Systems: Yanmar systems operate during a blackout by disconnecting from the utility grid when it is down to prevent harm to any service workers. The system then operates on a high efficiency and high capacity battery system, which keeps the power running.
